Improving the energy efficiency of our homes and accelerating the electrification of heat are vital to efforts to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, achieve the UK’s net zero targets and permanently lower people’s energy bills. In a bid to improve energy efficiency across the UK, in its 2022 Autumn Statement the government announced that it has allocated £6bn to help around a million families and businesses to reduce their energy use.
Families who are identified as needing the most support, such as those in poorly-insulated, low income or social homes will benefit from a range of options to help them make impactful changes to heat their homes for less and reduce emissions through energy efficiency measures. This includes better insulation for around 500,000 homes and radiator upgrades.
With nearly 50% of properties in England now having an Energy Performance Certificate of C, we have already made excellent progress in improving energy efficiency. That figure is up from just 14% in 2010. But more still needs to be done. The £6bn fund that was announced in the Autumn Statement covers the period 2025 to 2028 and includes another £1.5bn funding to support the installation of heat pumps, helping people transition easily to the modern, clean heating systems needed to become a net zero nation.
How we can help utilities to engage their customers on their decarbonisation journey
Going forward energy customers will need to be informed and educated as to what support is available to them to help them reduce their energy consumption, as well as advice on actions they can take themselves. That’s where we can help!
A behavioural science-based customer engagement program like ours provides utilities with a better understanding of their customers, enabling them to target individual households with personalised messages. These can be educational messages to promote support options available or to promote products and services that will make their home more energy efficient, such as better insulation, bigger radiators, solar panels or converting to a heat pump with the help of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.
Our personalised communications can also include motivational messages to nudge people to make behavioural changes that will reduce their energy consumption. Discover more about the nudge theory, how it works and how we apply it in our customer engagement programmes for utility companies.
We are perfectly positioned to help energy suppliers across the UK to target the right customers, with the right information at the right time. We’re already working with a host of energy and water suppliers across the UK to segment and target appropriate groups of customers with personalised messages relating to their household water and energy consumption to help them reduce their usage and their bills.
With the government pledging £6bn support to customers who need it most, now is the time to ramp up your customer engagement activities and actively discover which customers are in need of and eligible for support.
